Almere '90 and Ban-Topa split double-header
Nederlands
LOOSDRECHT (Neth.) - Almere '90 and Ban-Topa Future Stars played a double-header on a sunny, but chilly Saturday (April 4). Today's games were played at the site of Hilversum Hurricanes in Loosdrecht, as the home field in Almere was unplayable.

Ban-Topa won the opener 9-1, then Almere '90 won the next game with the same score. In the second game, Ban-Topa collected only one basehit.

In Zwijndrecht, Zwijndrecht and Euro Stars also handed each other a big loss. Euro Stars opened with a 15-5 win, then Zwijndrecht won the next game, 11-1.

For both teams, today's double-header was their final preparation for the upcoming season, which opens next Saturday, April 11.

Ban-Topa Future Stars opens on Saturday with a double-header at UVV, starting at 2 PM.
Almere '90 opens with a double-header at Onze Gezellen, starting at 4 PM.

Game One

Ban-Topa Future Stars led only 2-1 after four innings, but then added seven more runs in the next two at bats to win 9-1.

In the first inning, Emily Stenzler led off with a walk, stole second base and advanced on a passed ball. The bases then got loaded when two more walks followed for Jenny Kinburn and Shanny. Then, a passed ball enabled Stenzler to score the first run and a following grounder by Shirley made it 2-0. Ban-Topa got the bases loaded again with two outs, but three runners were left behind when pitcher Merel Boers closed with a strikeout.

Almere got one run back in its first at bat. Suzanne Poelgeest, Stacy Groot and Renee Adriaanse all walked to start the inning, but then a line drive ended in a double play. A walk for Kelsy Pieneman re-loaded the bases, then a single by Maxime Scheffer brought in Groot. Like Ban-Topa, the bases were left loaded, as pitcher Nadine van Roode also finished with a strikeout.

Ban-Topa then stranded a runner on third base in the second inning and another one on second base in the third. Almere also got into scoring position in these two at bats. In both innings, the team left a runner on first and second base.

Ban-Topa was retired in order in the fourth inning by new pitcher Shanna te Vrede, while Almere left another runner on third base in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ban-Topa then scored three runs in the fifth inning to take more distance. Jenny Kinburn led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. With one out, Shirley doubled and Ylaine van den Hove walked. The first then scored on a passed ball, the latter on a wild pitch.

Ban-Top then rallied for four runs in the sixth inning. Samayra led off with a single and scored on a following grounder by Emily Stenzler, who then scored herself on a passed ball. A 2-run single by Shirley later lifted the lead to 9-1 in favor of Ban-Topa, which is coached by Lloyd Todman, who last season led the women-squad of HCAW.

In its last two innings, Almere reached base only two more times.

Game Two

The second game was completely different and the roles were clearly reversed. This time, Almere '90 was the most productive team, which had a 6-run rally to win 9-1.

Ban-Topa initially took an 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning via a passed ball. The team then stranded a runner on first and third base in the third inning and another one on third base in the fourth at bat. In the fifth inning, Emily Stenzler accounted for the lone basehit of her team.

Trailing 1-0, Almere answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Shanna te Vrede led off with a triple and scored the tying run on an one-out triple by Kelsy Pieneman. The latter then scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Britt Remmers.

The home team added its next run in the third inning when Merel Boers led off with a single and went on to score on a sac-fly by Stacy Groot.

Almere '90 then rallied for six runs in the fourth inning. Shanna te Vrede led off with a single, then Maxime Scheffer's grounder ended in an error. With one out, the bases got loaded when another error followed on a grounder by Britt Remmers. Hereafter, two runs were scored when a third error was made on a hit by Ismay Poot, then two passed balls accounted for the next two runs. Merel Boers then walked, which led to a pitching change. With two outs, Suzanne Poelgeest singled and the final two runs were scored when Stacy Groot connected for a single, which was followed by an outfield-error.
