Decisive games Midden-Nederland Cup cancelled; Final coming Saturday
Nederlands
LOOSDRECHT (Neth.) - The two decisive games of this years Midden-Nederland Cup, organized by Hilversum Hurricanes, rained out on Sunday (March 29).

Almere '90 and Amsterdam Pirates were to meet in the game for third and fourth place, then the final would be played between UVV and Centrals. The final will now be played next week, as UVV and Centrals were then scheduled to play a double-header against each other. The games will be played in Vleuten at the site of UVV.

Despite unfavorable weather conditions, it was cold and it rained, the tournament went underway on Saturday and all six games could be played as scheduled. The tournament featured four teams that will play in this years Silver League: Almere '90, Amsterdam Pirates, Centrals and UVV. These four were joined by two First Divsision-clubs, BioSilk Quick/Red Caps and host Hilversum Hurricanes.

On Day 1, UVV and Centrals remained unbeaten in pool-play. UVV won with big scores of 11-0 and 21-3 against Almere '90 and Quick/Red Caps respectively. Centrals opened with a 20-1 win vs. Hilversum, then won 7-1 vs. Amsterdam Pirates.

This set-up the semi-finals for Sunday-morning. UVV and Centrals then advanced to the Final by winning 5-1 vs. Pirates and 6-0 vs. Almere '90, respectively.

After the two semi-finals, the game for fifth and sixth place between Hilversum and Quick/Red Caps went underway, but was halted due to rain in the second inning with Hilversum leading 2-1.

Hereafter, it was hoped that the game for third and fourth place could be played between Almere '90 and last years winner Amsterdam Pirates. But due to the weather conditions and some injuries, Amsterdam didn't want to play anymore, resulting in the cancellation of the game. With that, Almere '90 was awarded third place, while the final between UVV and Centrals was cancelled due to the rain.

In its first game, UVV struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning. After Laura Arp had led off with a single, a double by Naomi Andringa, wild pitch and passed ball accounted for the three runs.

UVV was then held scoreless in the second inning by starting pitcher Shanna te Vrede, who then struckout two batters.

In the third at bat, UVV rallied for four runs. Helma Pluim led off with a double, then scored when a throwing error towards third base followed. With one out, Cintia de Groodt walked and Renske de Leeuw singled, which led to runners on second and third base. The next three runs were then scored on a strikeout-passed ball, fielder's choice and strikeout-plus-throw-to-first-base.

UVV staged another 4-run rally in the fourth inning. This time, Helma Pluim led off with a walk and scored on a double by Marleen van Gasteren. After the bases got loaded, all three runners scored when a single by Bente Erkelens was followed by an outfield-error.

For Almere, Suzanne Poelgeest led off the game with a single, but that was to be her team's lone basehit in this game. However, Almere threatened to open the score in the first inning, as it got the bases loaded with no outs. After the lead-off single, Britt Remmers reached on an error and Merel Boers walked to load the bases. However, a force at home followed on a grounder by Shanna te Vrede, then UVV-pitcher Cintia de Groodt followed with a strikeout. A flyout ended the at bat. Starting with the strikeout, De Groodt retired 11 of the next 12 batters, including nine in a row.

Centrals decided the game against Hilversum right away in the first inning with a 6-run rally.

The team from De Bilt added three more runs in the second and third at bat, then rallied for eight runs in the fourth to register a huge win.

The Centrals-offense was led by Petya Sokolová, who was 4-for-4 with two singles, a triple and a 2-run homerun.

Hilversum registered only three basehits off of two pitchers. Pauline Baaij started for Centrals and gave up one basehit. Hilversum then collected two more hits and scored its lone run off of American Cheyenne Bumpus, who took over the pitching in the third inning.

Hilversum, which will play in the First Division this season, is led by veteran coach Hans Snel, who has a long career in coaching softball. Last season, Snel was the coach of the Junior-team of Twins. Snel will be assisted by Soon-Young Lam, who herself played in the Dutch big league in the eighties for HCAW, but has been active as a coach in the last years.

Game 3 - Almere '90 vs. BioSilk Quick/Red Caps

After having lost its first game, Almere '90 recovered and went on to win its next game 6-1 against Quick/Red Caps.

But the team faced an 1-0 deficit after two innings, as Quick/Red Caps had taken the lead in the opening at bat. Xaressa van Berkel then led off with a bunt-single, advanced on a grounder by Debbie van de Kolk and reached third base on a passed ball. She then scored when Miriam Boode doubled. After the latter had stolen third base, she stranded there, as two outs followed.

Quick/Red Caps got close to another run in the third inning. Lead-off hitter Xaressa van Berkel was then hit by a pitch, stole second base and advanced on a passed ball. Hereafter, Debbie van de Kolk walked and moved to second base on another passed ball. But then, the Almere-defense turned a double play on a bunt by Mirjam Boode and a flyout ended the inning.

Almere had failed to score in its first at bat after getting the bases loaded with no outs. Stacy Groot (error), Britt Remmers (fielder's choice) and Renee Adriaanse (walk) were on base when an infield-fly followed. Next, a line drive by Shawna van der Schouw was caught and a grounder ended this scoring opportunity.

Almere then struck with four runs in the third inning. With one out, Britt Remmers tripled and scored the tying run on a single by Renee Adriaanse. Hereafter, Kelsy Pieneman doubled and two runs were scored on a following single by Shawna van der Schouw. The latter then advanced on a walk for Mandy Pieneman and scored on a 2-out single by Montana Roelvink to make it 4-1.

Two runs were added in the fourth inning. Stacy Groot then led off with a double and scored on an one-out single by Renee Adriaanse. With two outs, Shawna van der Schouw tripled to lift the lead to 6-1.

After last season, Quick/Red Caps added two former big league-palyers, Nikki Harte and Chuderika Straker. Last season, Nikki Harte played in the big league for Olympia Haarlem after also having played in the highest division for Centrals and UVV. Since 2013, she was a member of the Netherlands National Softball Team, with whom she participated in two USA-trips last year. Chuderika Straker played in the big league for UVV in 2013.
Besides these two, the team has five more players on its roster with big league-experience, being Kayleigh Adelina, Mirjam Boode, Vera de Boer-Esmeijer, Floor van Dijk and Nathalie Vanderwijst. The team is led by coaches Ricardo Bryson, Tim Zwaan and Scott Thomas.

In November, the team of Quick/Red Caps was nominated for the title Sports Team of the Year in the Municipality of Amersfoort.
