Tex Town Tigers opens Mastenbroek Tournament with shutout

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - The softball-team of Tex Town Tigers opened the 33rd edition of its annual, international J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament on Friday-evening (April 1) with a 9-0 shutout-win against Zürich Barracudas from Switzerland.

Last season, Barracudas participated for the first time in the event and then finished in eighth place. In the regular season in Switzerland, the team finished in third place for the third concecutive year.

Tex Town Tigers returned to the highest Dutch division last year and reached the Play-Offs, but then was eliminated.

The regular season in the Golden League opens on Saturday, April 16.

Tex Town Tigers vs. Zürich Barracudas
Tex Town Tigers used two pitchers tonight, who gave up only one basehit to the Swiss squad. Daniëlle ten Donkelaar started and allowed only one batter to reach base. In the 2 1/3 inning, she pitched, the righthander struckout three battes. After having retired the side in the first inning (two strikeouts), she walked Shea Williams with one out in the second. She advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Rölli, but then stranded.

In the third inning, with one out, Anna-Bè Bartels took over the pitching and also struckout three batters. Last season, she pitched for Terrasvogels, but she returned to the club, where she has played earlier. She began with a strikeout, but then gave up a single to Amanda Sugiter, which was to be the lone Swiss hit. Hereafter, she retired the next four batters in a row.

Tex Town Tigers opened the score in the first inning off Amanda Sugiter, who went the distance for Barracudas. With two outs, Annemiek Jansen walked, stole second base and advanced on a wild pitch. She then scored on a single by Laura Wissink, who was 3-for-3 and scored twice.

Two runs were added in the second inning. Aafje van Baal and Marije ten Thij led off with walks. With two outs, they both scored when Nadine Marinus reached on an error.

A 4-run rally followed in the third at bat. Laura Wissink led off with a single and moved each base on three consecutive wild pitches. Myrthe Smid, who also returned to Enschede after having played for Terrasvogels, walked on the wild pitch that enabled Wissink to score. The bases were loaded when Aafje van Baal was hit by a pitch and Marije ten Thij singled. Smid was then forced out at home on a grounder by Cheyenne Scheffer, but then the next three runs were scored on a walk for Nadine Marinus, a single by Amber Krijgsman and a wild pitch.

TTT scored its final two runs in the fourth thanks to a 2-out, 2-run double by Cheyenne Scheffer.
