Van den Hurk opts for Free Agency
CLEVELAND, Ohio (USA) - Pitcher Rick van den Hurk is a Free Agent and as some teams showed interest in the services of the righthander, it is expected that he will sign with a new club within a few days. Van den Hurk was granted his Free Agency on April 6 by the Cleveland Indians.

Two months ago, on February 3, the Orioles released Van den Hurk after he was removed from the 40-man roster on January 24 and was designated for assignment. As a Free Agent, he then signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on February 22. After pitching in four Spring Training-games for the Blue Jays, he was put on waivers by the Canadian club. On March 21, the Cleveland Indians selected him off waivers and added Van den Hurk to its Major League-roster. However, after throwing in only two games for the Indians, he was designated for assignment on March 30 and therefore was removed from the 40-man roster. A few days later, on April 4, after clearing waivers again, Van den Hurk was outrighted to the Columbus Clippers, the Triple-A team of the Indians, where he would be a reliever.

When a player is outrighted he can refuse this assignment and become a Free Agent or accept the assignment and defer his free agency until after the season. By accepting an outright assignment, the player mostly thinks that he will be added again to the 40-man roster before the end of the season. If he is re-added to the roster, he no longer can become a free agent.

Van den Hurk didn't accept the assignment and so, two days after the announcement, he was granted his Free Agency by the Indians.
