Sparks Haarlem first finalist Mastenbroek Tournament
Nederlands
ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Day 2 of the annual J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament was played on a somewhat sunny, but also chilly Saturday (April 4). A total of 14 softball games were played.

At the end of the day, we had one finalist, as Oolders Omaco Sparks will win Pool B, whatever the result on Sunday. Their opponent comes from the match-up between Terrasvogels and FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem.

For Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels, who last season faced each other in the best-of-five Holland Series, today were their first games played in the exhibition season.

The National Team of Germany also played its first games today and that saw the debut of Dutch Coach André Prins, who recently was added to the German coaching-staff as Hitting Coach.

On Sunday, four more preliminary games are scheduled, then the decisive games begin at 12:15 PM.

(April 4)

HCAW vs. SK Joudrs Praha

HCAW opened Day 2 of the tournament with a strong game against SK Joudrs Praha. After trailing 3-0 in the opening at bat, the Silver League-team boldly held a 7-4 lead after three innings. But then, the Czech opponent again turned the game its way with a late comeback to win 9-7. Only two of the Czech runs were earned. On Friday-evening, Joudrs trailed 3-0 against Tex Town Tigers, but went on to win 7-3 after a late rally.

HCAW-pitcher Anouk Sassen gave up three unearned runs in the first inning. She began with two walks and the runners moved on a sacrifice bunt by Helena Novotná. A strikeout then ended in a throwing error and the first run. A following strikeout would have accounted for the third out, but now the inning continued and Klára Patlichová connected for a 2-run single to make it 3-0.

However, HCAW reacted immediately off of Apolena Výborná, who also had pitched Friday's game. Lindsay Gase led off with a double and advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, Dervisa Mutic walked, then the lead runner scored in a double steal-situation. With two outs, Anouk Sassen walked and Mutic stole third base. A wild pitch then led to the second run.

Joudrs was held scoreless in the second at bat, as Anouk Sassen retired the side, including two strikeouts. Moments later, HCAW again scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead. With two outs, Lindsay Gase singled, stole second base and moved on a wild pitch. Next, Monique Melissant walked and then Dervisa Mutic delivered a 2-run triple to give HCAW the lead.

Joudrs came alongside in the third when Klára Patlichová this time contributed with an RBI-double.

But again, HCAW didn't relinquish, as it scored three runs to take a 7-4 lead. Anouk Sassen led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Milot van Doesburg. Wendy Bierman then singled and stole second. With runners on second and third base and two outs, it was Odette Kuipers who drove the ball into rightfield for a 3-run homerun!

The nerves then probably got the best of the HCAW-defense, as it committed three errors in the top of the fourth inning, leading to five runs that gave Joudrs a 9-7 lead. This time, the young, but talented team of HCAW was unable to do something back, but it had left a fine impression in its debut game on the event.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. SK Joudrs Praha

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem defeated SK Joudrs Praha 4-2, which decided Pool B. In case Sparks Haarlem would end up empty handed against DSS on Sunday, this Pool would end in a tie for first place between the Haarlem-squad and the Czechs, which has no game left in the preliminary round. But as Sparks Haarlem have won the head-to-head game, it will end in first place. And so, Sparks Haarlem became the first team qualify for the all-deciding final on Sunday-afternoon.

After Joudrs was retired in order in the first inning by Dagmar Bloeming, Sparks Haarlem opened the score moments later. With one out, Anne Blaauwgeers walked and stole second base. She then scored when Areke Spel reached on an error.

Joudrs got two runners on base with two outs in the second inning, but Bloeming closed with a strikeout.

Sparks Haarlem then added two runs in the home of the second. Maxime van Dalen and Manoa Weijgertse led off with singles. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Kiki Draaijer, but that was followed by a throwing error trying to complete a double play, which led to a run. With two outs, Chantal Versluis reached on an error and that made it 3-0.

Joudrs then narrowed the deficit to 3-2 by scoring twice in the third inning when the Sparks-defense committed two errors. Veronika Klimplová led off with a single and Tereza Jakešová reached on an error. After the two had advanced on a sacrifice bunt, two runs were scored when Helena Novotná also reached on an error. A force out followed and Bloeming ended with a strikeout.

Sparks Haarlem then scored an insurance run in the bottom of the third when Karin Tuk led off with a single and went on to score on sacrifice fly by Manoa Weijgertse.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Carrousel Moscow

The long second day ended with the 14th softball-game played today. As some of the games took somewhat longer, the schedule had to be pushed forward. Because of this, the game between FysioExpert Haarlem and Carrousel Moscow, switched fields. It initially was scheduled for Field 3, which has no artificial lights and therefore could not be played there. And so, it moved to the main field, but started two hours later than originally scheduled and ended in a scoreless tie.

Whatever the result of this game, it would not create a decision in Pool A. That will come on Sunday-morning when Olympia Haarlem meets Terrasvogels in the decisive match-up. Because of tonight's result, a tie on Sunday would clinch Terrasvogels in the final, while Olympia needs a victory.

The game was a pitching duel between National Team-pitchers Ekaterina Eronina (Russia) and Eva Voortman (Netherlands). The latter struckout 10 batters and gave up only three hits, while the Russian pitcher struckout eight and gave up four hits.

Carrousel got close to a run in the second inning. Ekaterina Eronina led off with a walk, then her pinch-runner Narine Stepanyan advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Next, Irina Ilyashenko singled and Stepanyan tried to score, but was eliminated at the plate after a nice throw from centerfielder Merel Oosterveld.

In the third inning, Carrousel had runners on first and second base with one out, but then Voortman struckout the next two batters.

In the bottom of the third inning, Brenda Beers led off for Olympia with a single, but was caught stealing. Then Eva Voortman singled and stole second base, but was left behind.

In the fourth Russian at bat, Irina Ilyashenko tripled with two outs, but again Voortman closed with a strikeout.

For Olympia, Dinet Oosting reached on an error with one out in the fourth inning, but then Stephanie Ruiter lined into a double play.

In the bottom of the fifth, Brenda Beers singled with two outs and stole second, but was left behind, which ended the game in a scoreless tie.
