Olympia Haarlem wins big in PO-opener
Nederlands
ALMERE (Neth.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem opened the 6-game Golden League Play-Off Weekend on Saturday (September 19) with a big 13-0 shutout-win vs. Tex Town Tigers at the site of Almere '90 in Almere. This game was followed by two more today and will be concluded with three games on Sunday, also in Almere.
Game Two - Terrasvogels vs. Olympia Haarlem
Game Three - Tex Town Tigers vs. Terrasvogels

The Play-Off Weekend is part of a new format to conclude the softball-season. It will be followed by the Golden League Holland Series Weekend, which will take place coming weekend on the site of Hoofddorp Pioniers in Hoofddorp. In the new set-up, the winner of the regular season (which ended on Sunday, September 13) automatically qualified for this final weekend. But that also means that season-winner Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem will not play this weekend.

The teams that finished in second, third and fourth place qualified for the Play-Offs during the regular season. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem ended in second place, ahead of Terrasvogels. Last Sunday, Tex Town Tigers became the fourth team to reach the top-4, passing DSS on the final day of the season. But despite having secured their spot in the Play-Offs, these three teams now play this additional round. The final ranking in this round determines the filling in of the games for the Holland Series Weekend.

During the Holland Series Weekend, the three regular Play-Off rounds will be played to be followed by the Holland Series. As opposed to previous seasons, all these rounds, including the decisive Holland Series, will only be a best-of-one! In the past, the Play-Offs were best-of-three series and the Holland Series a best-of-five.

Also in the new format, all these postseason-games will be played at a neutral site. Besides the Play-Off Weekend in Almere and the Holland Series Weekend in Hoofddorp, there also were two Promotion/Relegation Series today in Rosmalen.

Olympia Haarlem collected 11 basehits in the game, including three by Maranca Ham, while Stephanie Ruiter scored three runs. Tex Town Tigers registered only two hits, both by Annemiek Jansen, one off of each of the two pitchers Olympia Haarlem used.

It was Tex Town Tigers that got into scoring position first. With two outs in the top of the first inning, Annemiek Jansen reached on a bunt-single, then stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Next, Laura Wissink walked and advanced on a fielder's choice to become the second runner in scoring position. But hereafter, starter Eva Voortman ended the at bat with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the first inning, Olympia Haarlem scored three runs with two outs off of starter Amber Krijgsman. With one out, Chiya Louie singled. This was only the second game Chiya Louie played this season for Olympia Haarlem. The National Team-player of Great Britain appeared briefly in the first game of a home double-header vs. Terrasvogels on June 20. She started as designated player, got one at bat and then was replaced by a pinch-hitter. Louie moved on a grounder by Stephanie Tofft, then scored on a single by Mariëlle Vleugels. Hereafter, Stephanie Ruiter and Brenda Beers also singled, resulting in the next run. The bases got loaded when Rachel van Veen was hit by a pitch, then the third run was added on an infield-hit by Maranca Ham. Three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the inning.

Olympia Haarlem rallied for four more runs in the second inning. All were unearned as the TTT-defense committed three errors. Eva Voortman led off with a bunt-single, then reached third base on a following throwing error. With one out, Stephanie Tofft was hit by a pitch. An error on a grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels, single by Stephanie Ruiter and an error on a grounder by Rachel van Veen then accounted for the four runs.

In the top of the third inning, off of new pitcher Mariëlle Vleugels, Annemiek Jansen hit her second basehit with two outs, but again was left behind.

In the bottom of the third, off of new pitcher Romy van der Wielen, Olympia rallied for six unearned runs to lift the lead to 13-0 and put the game completely out of reach for Tex Town Tigers. Lead-off hitter Judith Buschman was hit by a pitch and next batter Chiya Louie walked. A dropped fly ball then led to the first run. A grounder by Brenda Beers, a wild pitch, single by Rachel van Veen, triple by Maranca Ham and single by Judith Buschman then brought in the following five runs.

In the top of the fourth, Vleugels retired the side and that ended the game via the mercy-rule.
