HCAW wins vs. UVV and Pioniers in triple-header
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW hosted a triple-header on Sunday, March 15 in which it was joined by Hoofddorp Pioniers and UVV. This season, HCAW and UVV will play in the new Silver League, while Pioniers will play in the First Division.

In the opening game in Bussum, UVV struck early, scored six runs in the first two innings and won 9-5 vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers.

In the second game, HCAW won 8-3 vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers, highlighted by a 5-run rally in the third inning.

The 3-team tournament ended with an 11-7 for HCAW against UVV, thanks to a 4-run rally in the fourth inning.

All three teams are filled with talented players. In the last six years, 19 of them were or are part of the Dutch National Team Programs, with 18 of them being part of (preliminary) selections for the Dutch National Junior (Team Red) and Dutch National Cadets (Team White).

Nine of these players are on the roster of HCAW, being Xanthe Fleurkens, Sanne Helmig, Roos-Marijn Kramer, Odette Kuipers, Ilona Marcelis, Marley Martis, Monique Melissant, Dervisa Mutic and Eliza Rikkelman. A tenth player, Laura van Essen was on the preliminary roster for the Netherlands National Team in 2012.

UVV has five of these players, being Ilona Andringa, Naomi Andringa, Melissa Burger, Katja Distel and Kirsten Vierdag, while Pioniers has four: Demi Erkemeij, Lisanne Korringa, Ingemarie Rumai and Iris Strookman.

Three of these players, Ilona Andringa, Roos-Marijn Kramer and Dervisa Mutic were recently selected for the Holland Talent Team, which this season will play in the Golden League.

What transfers are concerned after last season, Pioniers saw Jill Kranenburg leave to play for Amsterdam Pirates. The team added four new players: Jordy Leen, Angela Spoelstra (both Almere '90), Iris Strookman (Sparks Haarlem) and Cheraine Valk (Vennep Flyers).
This season, the team will be led by Tuti Rumai, Glennsig Polonius and Dè Flanegin, who were named as new coaching-trio in November.

HCAW also will be led by a new Head Coach, as Nick Braakman was named as successor of Lloyd Todman in November. Braakman will be assisted by David Mulder. In the last two seasons, Braakman was the Assistant Coach of big leaguer Terrasvogels, with whom he won the Dutch Championship and European Cup Winners Cup in 2013.
New in the HCAW-team this season are Yaelle van Blanken (Robur '58), Milot van Doesburg, Lara Hoekstra, Monique Melissant (all Amsterdam Pirates), Anne-Carlijn Huffermann (De Zuidvogels) and Anouk Sassen, who last season made her big league-debut pitching for DSS.
Three players left Bussum: Cheyenne Scheffer (Tex Town Tigers), Emily Stenzler (Ban-Topa Future Stars) and Shanna te Vrede (Almere '90).

UVV last season reached the Play-Offs of the Dutch big league, but nevertheless relegated (!), due to a weird construction in the season's format. After losing the first round of the Play-Offs, the team finished in fourth place and therefore had to play in the Qualification Pool for this years new Golden League. In that series, UVV ended in a tie for third place with Tex Town Tigers, then lost a decisive one-game play-off.

UVV will be led again by veteran coach Hubert Bomba, who will be assisted by Rudy Dirksen, who was added to the coaching staff in December.
The team almost stayed intact after last season, as only Jannylu Farrel and Sanne Blokhuis both retired and were the only players to leave.
Coming to UVV were Donna Hartman, Michelle van Waveren (both Amsterdam Pirates) and Renske de Leeuw (De Zuidvogels), while Ilona Andringa already had joined the team during last season coming from Terrasvogels. Helma Pluim and Bente Erkelens both were added to the roster from the second team.

After today's games, HCAW had a double-header scheduled on Saturday, March 21, but that was cancelled. The team then played a double-header the next day vs. Golden League-team FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem. (Recap of these games)

Pioniers played its next games against Silver League-team Ban-Top Future Stars. No details of these games are available (yet).

UVV had a double-header scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at home against Roef!, but that was cancelled as the field was unplayable. In the weekend of March 28-29, UVV participates in the Midden-Nederland Cup in Hilversum.

Game One: UVV vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers

In the opening game, UVV was the home team and opened the score in the first at bat. Laura Arp connected well, drilled the ball into the outfield and raced to third base with a triple. Moments later, she scored on a passed ball. Hereafter, Helma Pluim and Cintia de Groodt reached base on an error, but both were left behind.

In the second inning, Pioniers came alongside. This time, it was Lisanne Korringa who led off with a triple. She then scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Dionne Cooper.

UVV reacted immediately by rallying for five runs in its second at bat. The bases got loaded when Michelle van Waveren led off with a single, Renske de Leeuw walked and Bente Erkelens also singled. A force play-grounder by Naomi Andringa followed, but no outs were made, meaning the go-ahead run was scored and the bases remained loaded. A following error on the throw from the outfield led to the next run. With runners now on first and second base, a passed ball moved them, then the bases were loaded again when Felicity Pique reached on a bunt-single. Next, the Pioniers-defense made the first out when Erkelens was eliminated at the plate on a force play-grounder by Laura Arp. Hereafter, the bases were cleared when Kirsten Vierdag hit a 3-run triple that gave UVV a 6-1 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Pioniers scored four runs in the fourth inning to narrow the deficit to 6-5. Jordy Leen led off with a bunt-single, Demi Erkemeij followed with a single, then both scored on an one-out single by Lisanne Korringa. An error on a grounder by Dionne Cooper followed to put runners on second and third base, then a flyout accounted for the second out. But then Marijke Boerema tripled to bring in both runners and make it 6-5. Hereafter, pitcher Helma Pluim (who had taken over the pitching in this inning) avoided more runs, as she ended the inning with a strikeout.

In the home of the fourth inning, UVV took more distance by scoring three runs with two outs. With Bente Erkelens (error) on first base and one out, Felicity Pique walked, but then the first was forced out on a grounder by Laura Arp. The bases got loaded when Kirsten Vierdag walked and Helma Pluim then delivered a 2-run single to increase the lead to 8-5. Moments later, Vierdag scored UVV's ninth run on a wild pitch.

In the fifth and last inning of this game, UVV left two runners in scoring position, but the team held onto the lead. Pioniers got a runner on second base in the fifth and another one on third base in the sixth, but was held scoreless in these at bats.

Game Three: HCAW vs. UVV

In this game, UVV took an early lead by scoring three runs with two outs in the first at bat. Helma Pluim was hit by a pitch and moved to third base on a following single by Cintia de Groodt. The bases got loaded when Marleen van Gasteren walked and all runners advanced on a passed ball, leading to the first run. A single by Michelle van Waveren produced the next two runs, but she then stranded herself on third base.

HCAW got one run back in its first at bat when Milot van Doesburg and Laura van Essen hit back-to-back doubles with one out.

In the next inning, HCAW rallied for six runs for an apparent decisive lead, but the team needed an additional rally later in the game to win. In the second inning, eight consecutive batters reached base safely, resulting in the six runs, four of which were unearned. The bases got loaded when Kaylee Fontilus, Yaelle van Blanken and Xanthe Fleurkens (bunt) all singled. Sanne Helmig delivered the fourth basehit in a row to bring in a run and kept the bases loaded. An error, two passed balls and two more errors then accounted for the next five runs to lift the lead to 7-3.

UVV got back into the game by scoring twice in the third inning. With one out, Cintia de Groodt reached on an error with one out and Michelle van Waveren doubled with two outs. Following singles by Renske de Leeuw and Bente Erkelens then narrowed the deficit to 7-5.

In the fourth inning, UVV came alongside. Felicity Pique led off with an infield-hit, then scored on a triple by Laura Arp. With two outs, the latter scored when Helma Pluim also tripled, but she was left behind on third base.

As the time almost had run out (tournament-rule), it became clear that the bottom of the fourth inning was to be the last. And HCAW would stage a 4-run rally that gave the team an 11-7 victory. Milot van Doesburg and Laura van Essen both singled, then an error and a passed ball led to two runs. With a runner on third base and two outs, singles by Wendy Bierman and Lindsey Gase brought in the next two runs.
