Another Dutch player in Major League Spring Training

GOODYEAR, Arizona (USA) - Another Dutch professional player was assigned to be with a Major League-team for a Spring Training-game on Wednesday (April 1).

This time, it was outfielder Jonathan Martijn, who was added to the big league-squad of the Cincinnati Reds as an additional minor league-player.

Martijn (wearing number 77) was with the Reds during the home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he didn't play. Neither did four other minor league-players, who were assigned to today's game. Cincinnati lost 3-0.

Martijn, who turned 21 on February 23, has played professionally in the organization of the Reds since 2013.

In his first season, 2013, he played in only seven games for the Rookie League-team of the Reds in the Arizona League. He batted .120 (3-for-25), scored one run and had no runs batted in.

Last year, he played a full season in the Reds Rookie League-team in Arizona. Martijn, who was born in Willemstad (Curaçao), played in 32 games and batted .230 (20-for-87) with five doubles and one triple. He scored five runs and batted in ten.

14 players with a Dutch passport have now played in this years Spring Training. They are Infielder Ozhaino Albies, Infielder Andrelton Simmons (both Atlanta Braves), Outfielder Roger Bernadina, Pitcher Jair Jurrjens (both Colorado Rockies), Infielder Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox), Infielder Carlton Daal (Cincinnati Reds), Infielder Didi Gregorius (New York Yankees), Catcher Spencer Kieboom, Outfielder Randolph Oduber (both Washington Nationals), Infielder Juremi Profar (Texas Rangers), Infielder Jonathan Schoop, Infielder Sharlon Schoop (both Baltimore Orioles), Infielder Hainley Statia (Milwaukee Brewers) and Catcher Shawn Zarraga (Los Angeles Dodgers).

Besides these 14, seven other Dutch players were or are with big league-teams during Spring Training, but didn't play. Catcher Chad Tromp, Outfielder Jonathan Martijn (both Cincinnati Reds), Infielder Gianfranco Wawoe (Seattle Mariners), Catcher Sherman Lacrus (Texas Rangers) and Denzel Richardson (Colorado Rockies) were assigned to a Major League-game of their respective organization, but didn't play. Pitcher Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Dodgers) and infielder Jurickson Profar (Texas Rangers) are on 40-man rosters, but are currently sidelined with injuries.

Bogaerts, Gregorius, Jonathan Schoop and Simmons are also on 40-man rosters.
