BUSSUM (Neth.) - Dutch champion HCAW has added lefthanded hitting first baseman Shurman Marlin to its roster for the 2023 season, the club announced on Friday (November 4). Marlin, who also can play in the outfield, played for Twins Oosterhout since 2018. He also played for Neptunus and Hoofddorp Pioniers.

On Sunday, HCAW also announced that veteran pitcher Sedley Karel will make his comeback in the team and in the Dutch big league. The experienced reliever last pitched at the highest level (and for HCAW) in 2017 and then retired. In the past three seasons, Karel played in a lower-level team of the Bussum-club. During this years postseason, Karel was added to the roster of the main-squad of HCAW, but he didn't came into action during the Play-Offs and Holland Series. Earlier, the righthander also played in the big league for UVV and Hoofddorp Pioniers.

Marlin is the fourth new player announced by the Bussum-club in the past few weeks, two of whom are returning. Earlier, HCAW announced the additions of righthanded pitcher Kaj Timmemans, infielder Delano Selassa and righthanded pitcher Nathan Diaby, who respectively played for Curaçao Neptunus, L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Hoofddorp Pioniers. This year, HCAW captured the Dutch Championship-title via a 4-game sweep against Neptunus in the Holland Series.

For Twins Oosterhout, Marlin is the sixth player who has left the club. Earlier, Neptunus announced the additions of lefthanded pitcher Ryan Huntington, infielder Tyriq Kemp, outfielder/first baseman Arthur Bonevacia and outfielder Rayshelon Carolina, while DSS/Kinheim confirmed the addition of outfielder Urving Kemp.

The transfer-period ends on November 15.

Shurman Marlin made his debut in the Dutch big league during the 2014 season when he appeared in seven games for Neptunus. In these games, Marlin proved to be a productive hitter, as he was 8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles, batting in two runs. Later that season, Marlin played for Neptunus in all seven games of the Holland Series won against Amsterdam Pirates. He then hit .261 with one double and a homerun.

In the 2015 season, Marlin was inserted in 23 games by Neptunus and then batted .215 with three doubles, one triple and one homerun, while batting in ten runs and scoring eleven. Marlin then didn't play for Neptunus in the Holland Series, which the team won against Kinheim.

After the 2015 season, Marlin transfered to Hoofddorp Pioniers for whom he was a regular player in 2016, playing in all 42 games of the regular season. In his first season in Hoofddorp, Marlin batted .258 with 31 basehits, eight doubles and one homerun. He scored 13 runs and led the team with 33 runs batted in.

In the following season, the first baseman batted .270, homered three times and scored twelve runs. This time, he had the second-highest total of the team with 27 runs batted in.

In his two seasons with Pioniers, Marlin played together with pitcher Lars Huijer, catcher/outfielder Quintin de Cuba, infielder Max Draijer and outfielder Kevin Dirksen. Coming season, they will be his teammates again, as all transfered to HCAW in the past few seasons.

Marlin changed teams again after the 2017 season, as he then transfered to Twins Oosterhout for whom he would play through this year. In 2018, his first season with his new team, Marlin immediately showed his offensive talents. With a .289 batting average, he was the best hitter of the team. He scored eleven runs and his 28 runs batted in were second-best of the team.

In 2019, Marlin was the fourth-best hitter of Twins Oosterhout with a .264 average, but led the team with six homeruns. He batted in 25 runs.

In the abbreviated 2020 season, Marlin batted over .300 for the first time in a full season. He batted .307, but four of his Twins-teammates batted higher. Marlin scored twelve runs and batted in ten.

Last year and this year, Marlin reached the Play-Offs with Twins Oosterhout. Marlin batted .271 in 2021, but he led the team with 37 runs batted in and seven homeruns, had the second-hiighest teamtotal with 38 basehits and scored a third-best total of 27 runs. This year, in which he mostly was the designated hitter, Marlin was less productive in the regular season, as he batted only .151 with one homerun, scored six runs and also batted in six.

Veteran righthander Sedley Karel last played in the highest league in the 2017 season. He then pitched in 15 games for HCAW, all in relief, mostly as closer. He was 0-2 with four saves and a 6.43 ERA. The righthander struckout nine batters, but walked 22 in 14 innings. After the season, Karel retired, but in the past three seasons, he pitched in a lower-leverl team of the HCAW-club.

Sedley Karel first played in the Dutch big league in 2011 when he was with UVV for whom he also played in 2012. Karel then played in his first season for HCAW in 2013. Next, the righthander played three seasons for Hoofddorp Pioniers. In all his seasons, Karel has been a reliever. In his first five seasons, he annually appeared in 22 or more games. In 2016, Karel led the league with eleven saves.

In 2014, Sedley Karel pitched for the Netherlands National Team during the Haarlem Baseball Week.
