DSS wins 8-inning exhibition game vs. Almere '90
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - The softball-team of DSS opened its exhibtion season on Saturday, March 21 with an 13-3 victory against Almere '90. Initially, the Haarlem-based team trailed 3-0 after Almere's opening at bat, but then turned the game around from the fourth inning on. Strong pitching avoided giving up more runs, as Almere reached base only three times after the first inning.

For today, Almere '90 had a double-header scheduled at Gryphons, but that was cancelled, while DSS was to play against Amsterdam Pirates, but that also was dropped. And so, Almere '90 and DSS decided to play against each other.

DSS will play in the Golden League this season, the new name for the highest Dutch league. Almere '90 will play in the Silver League, which will be the second highest division in the newly created Dutch National Softball League.

After completion of last season, Norman Ames was named the new Head Coach of DSS, succeeding Werner Angermann, who retired. DSS addes five new players to its roster: pitcher Svenja de Lincel, catcher Lorraine Kieft and infielder Melissa de Greef all came from Alcmaria Victrix, while infielders Kelly Koeman and Annemiek de Rover came to Haarlem from Amsterdam Pirates.
Leaving DSS were pitcher Anouk Sassen (HCAW) and outfielder Tessa Hoekstra (retired).

DSS initially had a double-header scheduled against Twins two weeks ago, but that was cancelled.

Coming weekend, Almere participates in the Midden-Nederland Cup in Hilversum.

In other games today, the double-header between HCAW and Twins also was cancelled due to the cold weather, as was the double-header between UVV and Roef!.
But there was another game today, as Zwijndrecht played a 9-inning game against Centrals. (Recap of this game)

(March 21)

In the first at bat, Almere '90 rallied for three runs off of DSS-starter Svenja de Lincel. Suzanne Poelgeest led off the game with a single, then Renee Adriaanse walked with one out. Both then scored the first runs for Almere when Shanna te Vrede tripled. Moments later, the latter scored the third run after a passed ball. Almere then threatened to score more runs, as it got the bases loaded. First, Kelsy Pieneman walked. With two outs, Mandy Pieneman and Stacy Groot also walked to load the bases, but a flyout then ended the inning.

In the third inning, Renee Adriaanse and Shanna te Vrede walked with two outs, but this time a strikeout accounted for the third out. Svenja de Lincel struckout eight batters, including three in the second inning and two in the fourth.

Quincey Catsburg took over the pitching in the fifth inning and allowed only one Almere-batter to reach base in the final four innings. With one out in the fifth inning, she gave up a single to Maxime Scheffer, but then retired the next eleven batters in a row, four of them with a strikeout.

DSS stranded a runner in scoring position in both the first and second inning, then scored twice in the third at bat. With one out, Melissa de Greef walked, advanced and scored when Dominique Burger singled. A triple by Denice van Dijk then drove in the second run.

DSS turned the game its way by scoring two more runs in the fourth at bat. Kelly Koeman and Anouk in den Kleef led off with singles, then advanced on a grounder. A single by Noa Brand then tied the score and a passed ball gave the home team a 4-3 lead.

DSS again scored two runs in the fifth inning. Denice van Dijk led off with a triple and went on to score on a single by Morgan Sampson. Hereafter, DSS got the bases loaded when Annemiek de Rover was hit by a pitch and Anouk in den Kleef (with one out) walked. A run was then scored when Noa Brand walked with two outs, but DSS then left three runners behind.

Four runs were added in the sixth inning. Morgan Sampson batted in two runs with a double in this at bat.

DSS also scored a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning. In the seventh thanks to the third triple by Denice van Dijk. In the eighth, Kelly Koeman led off with a double and scored on a basesloaded walk. A single by Melissa de Greef then brought in the 13th run for DSS.

DSS collected 16 basehits in the game, including three triples by Denice van Dijk. Kelly Koeman also collected three hits, including a double and a triple.

A special mentioning is in its place for umpire Arjan de Wever, who worked the game alone and did a fine job.
