Albies homers, Jansen strikes out three in Major League Spring Training

CLEARWATER / FORT MYERS / SARASOTA, Florida / MESA / PHOENIX / SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY, Arizona (USA) - Ozzie Albies homered for Atlanta Braves in Major League Spring Training on Wednesday (March 17).

Xander Bogaerts, Jonathan Schoop and Chadwick Tromp all collected a basehit and Kenley Jansen had another strong outing on the mound. Jurickson Profar also played on Wednesday.

In Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Ozzie Albies started as second baseman for Atlanta Braves in a 5-2 loss in an away-game against Baltimore Orioles. Albies flied out in the first inning off of starter John Means, who retired the first ten batters he faced. With one out in the top of the fourth, Albies became the first baserunner and connected well off of Means and hit a homerun to put Atlanta ahead, 1-0. This was the second homerun Albies hit in this years Spring Training. Baltimore came alongside in the fifth.

Albies flied out again in the top of the sixth off of reliever Paul Fry, then was replaced by Ehire Adrianza in the bottom of the sixth. In this at bat, Baltimore rallied for four runs. Atlanta scored its second run in the eighth at bat.



At jetBlue Park at Fenway South in Fort Myers, Xander Bogaerts played defensively for the first time. The Aruban player was the starting short stop for Boston Red Sox in a 9-1 win against Minnesota Twins and was 1-for-3.

Bogaerts led off in the second inning and then was struckout by starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker. With two outs, Bobby Dalbec hit a grand slam homerun to put Boston ahead.

With one out, J.D. Martinez and Bogaerts hit singles in the bottom of the third inning. Both scored when Rafael Devers homered.

In the fourth inning, Bogaerts hit a force play-grounder that ended the at bat. He was replaced by Christian Arroyo in the top of the sixth.



In BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Jonathan Schoop started at third base for Detroit Tigers in an away-game against Philadelphia Phillies, which won 2-0. Schoop was 1-for-3.

Schoop led off with a grounder in the second inning, then grounded into an inning-ending double play in the fourth. In these two at bats, he faced starter Zack Wheeler, who struckout the side in the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, facing reliever José Alvarado, Schoop singled with one out, then was replaced by pinch-runner Ryan Kreidler. He stranded, as two strikeouts followed. Kreidler also became the new third baseman for Detroit in the bottom of the seventh.

Philadelphia scored both runs in the fourth inning, the first on a homerun by Odubel Herrera, the second on a double by Ronald Torreyes.



At Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Scottsdale, San Francisco Giants played an away-game against Colorado Rockies and won 11-8. This year, this site celebrates its tenth anniversary as the Spring Training-home of both Colorado and Arizona Diamondbacks, who share the facility.

Chadwick Tromp, who was optioned to Triple-A on Monday, was 1-for-3 for San Francisco. In the top of the sixth inning Colorado led 4-3, but San Francisco then took a 6-4 lead when Jason Krizan hit an one-out 3-run homerun off of reliever Lucas Gilbreath. Next batter Austin Slater singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Jaylin Davis, who then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch from Gilbreath. With two outs, Tromp was inserted as pinch-hitter for starting catcher Cust Casali, while Justin Lawrence took over the pitching from Gilbreath. Tromp singled to bring in Davis and make it a 7-4 score. Hereafter, Tromp stole second base, but then was left behind.

Tromp remained in the game as new catcher, then got his next at bat in the top of the seventh. This time, the Giants scored three runs, but Tromp grounded out. In the ninth, he faced reliever Ben Bowden, who struckout three batters, including Tromp, who was the third.



At Camelback Ranch-Glendale in Phoenix, Los Angeles Dodgers played an away-game against Chicago White Sox and won 4-3. The two teams share the stadium for their Spring Training-games on Camelback Ranch, where both teams have their own facilities to prepare for the new season.

Trailing 1-0 (wild pitch), Los Angeles came alongside in the second inning when Will Smith homered, then took a 2-1 lead in the third on a double by Austin Barnes.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kenley Jansen took over the pitching from starter Walker Buehler and had another strong outing. The righthander struckout all three batters he faced, Yermín Mercedes, Tim Anderson and Leury García. As he took over in a save-situation and the lead remained intact, Jansen was credited with his third Hold of the Spring-season.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jansen was relieved by Corey Knebel, who came to the Dodgers in December in a trade with Milwaukee Brewers. Los Angeles added two runs in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Colorado also scored twice to narrow the deficit to 4-3.



At Sloan Park in Mesa, San Diego Padres visited Chicago Cubs and lost 8-2. Jurickson Profar started in centerfield for San Diego and was 0-for-2 with a walk.

With two runners on base, Profar grounded out the end the first inning. Moments later, Chicago opened the score in its first at bat on a wild pitch, then added three runs in the second on a homerun by Willson Contreras.

San Diego got two runs back in the third inning. In the top of the fourth, Profar led off with a walk. With two outs, he was caught stealing at second base.

In the sixth inning, Profar was the third out for the third time. With one out, Wil Myers singled, but hereafter, Profar grounded into a double play.

In the bottom of the sixth, Profar was replaced by Jorge Mateo.
